Description: This course is all about deepening the FEA approach into your professional practice. We will start the session by reviewing the changes in family enterprise advising that we’ve seen emerge in the past 10 years. Then we’ll take you on a journey of self-reflection to explore your own practice and discover how you can better apply the FEA approach. Together, we will employ a series of vignettes to explore how an advisor might approach a continuity challenge in a more traditional approach versus how a certified FEA would approach the same issue.

Speaker
Katherine Bright, MBA, FEA
Kathy has worked with enterprising families for nearly twenty years. As a consultant, educator, and board director, she works with families to help them thrive across generations. In addition to this, Kathy guides professional advisors to better understand the complex needs of their family business clients.
Her range includes hands-on experience with strategy and governance, and she has served on numerous family business and public company boards. She has acted as the President and an Officer of the Board for Family Enterprise Canada and Director of the Board of the Business Families Centre at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. Kathy offers insightful consulting perspectives, with interests in leadership, succession and continuity planning, strategy, risk management, governance structures, fiduciary responsibility, and the development and maintenance of positive relationships in enterprising families.
We will focus on one key global trend: family offices, including an exploration of single-family offices (SFO) vs. multi-family offices (MFO). We will provide an overview of each and help you identify some of the challenges of implementing and operating them. Our goal is to translate your FEA strategic and systemic thinking into action with your family enterprise clients.
This course will not only take a deep dive into what’s new in family enterprise advising, but will also cover:
- Global trends and the evolution of the ‘family enterprise’ field
- An exploration of the question “What is an FEA?”
- A review of roles and strategic frameworks
- A refresher on the FEA Principles of Practice

Dr. Robert Nason, Ph.D, MBA, BA
Associate Professor, Desautels Faculty of Management,
McGill University
Renowned researcher in entrepreneurship, innovation, and family enterprise performance.
Robert Nason is a William Dawson Scholar and associate professor of Strategy and Organization at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. Robert’s research focuses on the role of entrepreneurship in society covering areas of family business, behavioral strategy, growth and the informal economy. His current research initiatives are particularly focused on entrepreneurship and economic inequality – examining entrepreneurial activity in contexts of poverty and wealth. Robert has received awards for research, including the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division’s Emerging Scholar Award in 2020 and teaching, including Poets & Quants Best 40 Under 40 MBA Professors (2022) and the Desautels Core Strategy MBA Teaching Award (2022).
Robert’s research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Fonds Québécois de la Recherche sur la Société et la Culture (FRQ-SC). His work has been published in leading academic outlets such as Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. In his commitment to research with practical relevance, Robert is actively collaborating in his research and its dissemination with non-governmental organizations, including the Family Enterprise Foundation in Canada and the Sustainable Livelihood Foundation in South Africa.
